Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled the schedule of the 5th unit of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (Chashma-5).
Pakistan is going to build the country’s largest nuclear power plant to increase electricity production. Pakistan’s Nuclear Agency has given approval for this. This plant has been designed by Chinese company Hualong.
Pakistan Nuclear Agency (PNRA) issued a statement saying that the license for the C-5 power plant has been issued and its capacity will be 1200 MW.
C-5 is a third generation advanced pressurized water reactor. In this double-shell containment and reactor-Filter waiting There are also systems. It will cost about 3.7 billion US dollars to build it.
This plant will provide its services for 60 years. This will be the third nuclear power plant of this design in Pakistan. Apart from this, two more plants are Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 and 3 which are already functioning.
Documents related to radiation protection, nuclear safety examined
According to the report, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission had applied for the license in April this year and had also submitted a preliminary safety assessment report and design and operational aspects related to nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management. Many documents were sent.
At present the total nuclear power capacity in Pakistan is about 3500 MW which is about 27 percent of the total power production of the country. Pakistan also has a nuclear plant named Karachi-3 whose capacity is about 1000 MW.
There are currently 6 nuclear power plants in Pakistan.
Second major grid breakdown occurred in Pakistan in 2023
Earlier on January 23, 2023, entire Pakistan was plunged into darkness. This was the second major grid breakdown in the country in two years. In most areas the blackout lasted for about 12-13 hours, while in many villages people remained without electricity for 24 to 72 hours. During this time, power supply started in the capital Islamabad and its neighboring city Rawalpindi after about 8 hours.
Internet and mobile phone services were affected due to the blackout. Many companies and hospitals said they used backup generators. The textile industry had to suffer a loss of about $70 million due to the blackout. People were not even able to get drinking water at many places. Many ATMs had also stopped working.
